Dr Huda Abu-Saad Huijer, RN,PhD,FEANS
American University of Beirut, Lebanon

Dr Huda Abu-Saad Huijer has a background in nursing and education. She was seconded to the School of Nursing at the University of California in San Francisco where she worked for a number of years. Her next step was at the American University of Beirut where she gained a BS. She later was awarded with an MS and PhD from the University of Florida.

Since 1990 she has been full professor, Head of Nursing Science, and director of the Centre for Nursing Research at the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands. In this capacity, she was instrumental in developing the MS and PhD programmes of study in nursing science and in heading a large number of nationally funded research projects.

She is a leading pioneer in the care and management of paediatric palliative care. As a founding member of the European Association for Palliative Care Paediatric Taskforce, she has been instrumental in the delivery of a strong research and publication portfolio in the area of life-limiting illness for children and in particular, their pain management. Her work has been integral to the development of the international children's palliative care agenda and she has worked for the World Health Organization and other international agencies to ensure the highest standards of clinical practice, education, and research in this complex and emotive area of care.

She has an extensive academic programme and supervised many Masters and PhD students in many countries. As a Fellow of the European Academy of Nursing Science, she holds many distinguished scholarships and faculty appointments across the world. She has set up and run the School of Nursing in the American University of Beirut in challenging times but always with positive results for the palliative care agenda.

Her contribution to the European Association for Palliative Care is extremely well noted. She currently holds two professorships in the UK as a visiting professor at the University of Surrey and an honorary professor at the University of Manchester. Her research expertise lies in the field of pain assessment and management as well as palliative care, particularly in children. Through her supervision of a large number of PhD students and work published, she has focused on the expanded role of the nurse in the care of the chronically ill at home.
