Ms Kathleen Defilippi
Kathleen Defilippi has been involved in the provision of palliative care since 1983, when she started the South Coast Hospice home care programme in rural KwaZulu-Natal.
In 1984, during the height of the apartheid era, the programme was expanded to serve the outlying rural areas. This rural outreach programme formed the foundation for the introduction of the widely-recognised and well documented Integrated Community-based Home Care model in 1996.
This model which promotes networking and has collaboration between the hospice and formal health care sector as a core component was subsequently written up as a best practice response to HIV/AIDS by the South African National Department of Health and adopted and promoted by the Hospice Palliative Care Association of South Africa.
Kathleen served on the Hospice Palliative Care Association of South Africa board from the time of the inception of the national association in 1988 up until 2007 as the Convener of the Patient Care and Education committee. In this capacity she co-ordinated the development of a course in palliative nursing care that gained South African Nursing Council recognition in 1989.
In 2005 she left South Coast Hospice and is currently employed by Hospice Palliative Care Association. In her current role as National Patient Care Co-ordinator she has been responsible for the development and implementation of palliative care standards by member hospices. This is linked to a successful mentorship programme which builds the capacity of hospices to meet the requirements of the comprehensive standards. The Association is in partnership with the Council for Health Services Accreditation of Southern Africa which is the accrediting body.
To date 20 South African hospices have achieved full accreditation via this process and the number is set to increase dramatically within the next two years. This fits squarely into The Association's development strategy whereby its members are equipped to provide guidance and support to various state, community and faith-based organizations willing to graft palliative care onto their existing programmes.
